The Hug Counter-- An Analysis of the Ganya Hugs byTonya
Hug #1
When: "The Body" (Season 5) The significance: This is significant for two reasons. One-this is the first time we see Anya hug someone that is not Xander. And two-Just moments before, during her breakdown in Willow and Tara's dorm room, she refused comfort from any of the people in the room, Xander included. She shies away from his touch and goes to sit by herself. Moments later, they arrive at the hospital, and while all the others are hugging and consoling each other, you can note that she's standing off to the side. When she finally does join the hugging, she chooses to launch herself at an oblivious Giles (who soon returns the hug once he gets over nearly being knocked over).
Hug #2
When: "Bargaining, Part 1" (Season 6) The significance: Giles is leaving, and Anya says goodbye the best way she knows how-by offering him an apple pie, telling him she'll take good care of his money, and leaving him with one of her trademark bear hugs.
Hug #3
When: "Flooded" (Season 6) The significance: Giles returns to Sunnydale, and outside of Buffy, no one shows their excitement at his return as much as Anya. Of course, this hug is a double meaning hug, classic Anya. She's glad to see him (welcoming him back and letting him know that he was missed), but then she also wants to verify that he's still leaving the Magic Box to her.
Hug #4
Hug #4
When: "Grave" (Season 6) The significance: Giles returns to save the day and greets Buffy with a comment about her hair and a hug. Watching this, Anya wants part of this. Giles' opinion seems to matter to her as much as his opinion matters to Buffy, if not more. So with a comment about her own hair to get him to note her, she greets him and he warmly welcomes her into his hug with Buffy.
Hug #5
When: "Grave" (Season 6) The significance: Giles is alive. Anya-who thought he was dead-is beyond relieved. 'Nough said.
