Writing Tips for Ganya-- An essay byTonya

Welcome to the wonderful world of Ganya-- a world where Giles and Anya make sense in a relationship. Whether writing them as friends, co-workers, or lovers, here are just a handful of tips to help you along the way. This list of helpful hints will become longer as time progresses.

1. Giles and Anya’s personalities are on two different ends of the spectrum. Giles is more reserved and private whereas Anya tends to speak before actually thinking, even about private matters such as sex. Her bluntness does have a tendency to annoy him at times, but at the same time, she gets annoyed with his subtlety on matters.

2. When writing them as co-workers, remember that technically Giles is in charge. He knows this, and Anya knows this. The difference? She doesn’t really care. She views herself as an equal partner in the business very early on, and even though he may not have in the beginning, Giles may have by the end. He *did* leave her in charge when he left for England.

3. Anya has a tendency to hug Giles when having an emotional moment--be it pain (“The Body”), relief to see him (“Grave”, “Flooded”), or sadness (“Bargaining”). Note that I said Anya hugs Giles and not the other way around. Giles has never initiated any of the hugs. He gladly returns them, but Anya is always the initiator. And when she hugs, it’s not a typical hug, she hugs tight. The kind of tight where you hope she doesn’t break anything. (see the Hug Counter for more insight)

4. Both Anya and Giles have a wide knowledge of demonology. The difference? Giles knows this from books; Anya knows from experience and inside knowledge. Although Giles tends to be the one with the answers, Anya has proven on countless occasions that she knows more than even he does about certain aspects of the demon world. For example, it was Anya who pointed out the badness of Giles selling a Khul's amulet and a Sobekian bloodstone (which were needed at the time for Glory’s big plan of creating a giant cobra to sniff out the key) in “Shadow”.
